John 19:30 “He said, ‘It is finished!’ And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.”

Matthew 27:50-51 “And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and yielded up His spirit. Then, behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom;…”

DESCRIPTION OF THE VEIL: It was large and costly, some sixty feet high, and made of rich materials. Josephus (‘Bell. Jud.,’ 5:05. 4) tells us of one of the veils in the temple, that it was a Babylonian curtain, embroidered with linen in various colours, woven together with wonderful art, such as the eye loved to rest upon. The direction of the rent would show that no human hands had torn it apart”.

  1. 60 feet long and 30 feet wide 2. As thick as the Palm of a man’s hand. 3. Made of 72 squares, which were joined together. 4.”took 300 priests to lift it.”
  2. The Curtain was FOR CONCEALMENT. The word “VEIL” in Greek (katapetasma) means “that which is spread out before.” One Commentary said, “There were two principal veils in the present temple – one between the vestibule and the holy place, and one other which is that here referred to, a constituent part of the edifice. This was the veil between the holy place and the holy of holies, which was moved aside only once a year to admit the high priest to the shrine on the great Day of Atonement (Exodus 26:33). Ordinary priests could enter the first room of the Temple, but only the high priest could enter the holy of holies, once a year, on the Day of Atonement.
  3. Our Lord Jesus died at about 3 p.m. just before the Passover sacrifices were due to be offered. There must have been thousands of priests on duty. Josephus said that the population of Jerusalem swelled to more than two million as Jews made pilgrimages to the Temple for the annual celebration.
  4. The Temple must have been jammed with multitudes with their lambs. The High Priest and his associates were preparing for the evening sacrifice. Within the holy place, they tended the many lights of the golden candlestick, and some priests were busy before the inner veil which hung between them and the holy of holies.
  5. At the exact moment Jesus was breathing His last breath on the Cross at Golgotha, Caiaphas the high priest was standing at his station in the inner court of the temple, preparing to offer the blood of a spotless Passover lamb.
  6. At the very instant Jesus cried IT IS FINISHED! When he gave up His spirit the massive, fortified veil that stood before the Holy of Holies was suddenly split in half from the top all the way to the bottom! Remember, the Veil was as thick as the palm of a man’s hand and it took 300 priests to lift it.
  7. The sound of the veil tearing must have been deafening as it ripped, starting from the top and going all the way down to the floor. It was as if invisible, divine hands reached out and grabbed it, ripping it to shreds.
  8. Only God could have torn that veil; no man could have done it! Have you ever tried to rip a Toronto phone book? It would be more difficult to rip than that.
  9. Imagine the priests seeing and hearing the veil tearing! Then an earthquake shook the Temple and city. Josephus said the middle lamp of the candlestick in the holy place went out and both Josephus & Tacitus say that the Great Temple Gates supernaturally opened by themselves.
  10. SIGNIFICANCE OF THE TORN VEIL
  11. THE OLD COVENANT WAS ABOLISHED & THE NEW COVENANT BEGUN
  12. This miracle meant that the whole system of types, shadows, and ceremonies that was the Mosaic Law had come to an end! What began when Moses went up Mount Sinai ended when Jesus went up Mount Calvary!
  13. The veil never ripped when Jesus was beaten or crucified, but only when He died. That’s because “a will is in force only when somebody has died” Heb. 9:16-17. But the moment Jesus died, the New Covenant, promised inJeremiah 31:31, was put into effect.
  14. JESUS WAS THE PERFECT SACRIFICE

Heb. 7:27-28, “He sacrificed for their sins once for all when he offered himself….the Son, who has been made perfect forever.” Heb. 10:10, “And by that will, we have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.” Heb. 10:14, “For by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy.” (Heb. 5:9; 9:12). WHAT MADE THE BLOOD OF JESUS SO PRECIOUS?

Hebrews 9:7 “But into the second part the high priest went alone once a year, not without blood, which he offered for himself and for the people’s sins committed in ignorance;”

Hebrews 9:12 “…but with His own blood He entered the Most Holy Place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption.” Once in time, once in space, one time for all obtained eternal  redemption. He once and for all atoned for the sins of mankind!

Leviticus 16:34 “…to make atonement for the children of Israel, for all their sins, once a year.”

Atonement:— To bring into harmony and make one. To remove the guilt, the shame, he voluntarily, willingfully, all by himself paid the price for sin. E and he alone carried the weight of the world on his shoulders not just a cross.

He didn’t just die for me … I died with Him.   Died Buried Made Alive Raised Up Seated In Heavenly Places!!!

When the revelation is revealed you are restored !!!  What revelation? That you died with him when you received him! Your restored into rightful relationship with him!

Quit trying to die to yourself! Just announce I’m dead to sin but alive in Christ.  Temptation can tease and try to trap you but you are triumphant with the trinity!!  You no longer have a sin relationship with Jesus! You have been redeemed, ransomed and rescued and restored!  WOW !!! WOW!!! WOW!!  Sin affects you more than your relationship with God!  Your not a robot, you may still mess up but it doesn’t mean your messed up!

Leviticus 17:11 “… life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it for you on the altar to make atonement for your souls, for it is the blood that makes atonement by the life.”

You are not saved from and angry God; you are restored to a loving God!

“Scripture teaches … that life lies in the blood. Blood, therefore , is the mysterious link between matter and spirit. …certain it is that this is the mysterious link which unite these apparently dissimilar things together, so that the soul can inhabit the body, and the life can rest in the blood” C.H. Spurgeon

Four Observations:

  1. It Has To Be Blood

Hebrews. 9:22 “… and without shedding of blood there is no remission.”

  1. It had to be Jesus Blood

1 Peter 1:18-19 “God paid a ransom to save you from the empty life you inherited from your ancestors. And it was not paid with mere gold or silver, which lose their value. It was the precious blood of Christ, the sinless, spotless Lamb of God.” NO more goats and animals. That would not work anymore. No more generational issues! Its covered!

Acts 20:28 “Therefore take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood.”

The blood was the key that gave Jesus access to the pit of hell itself to take the keys of death, hell and the grave and make a public spectacle of Satan himself. Jesus disrupted the party!

  1. Jesus’ Blood Had To Be Shed

John 10:18 “No one can take my life from me. I sacrifice it voluntarily. The Romans killed him. Jesus said, you don’t have the authority to take my life! I give you permission to kill me!  For I have the authority to lay it down when I want to and also to take it up again. For this is what my Father has commanded.”  Watch what’s going to happen! You are part of the plan!

Jesus is bringing you to His glory not back to the garden! His death paved the way to the emerald city!! Joint seating in heavenly places!  Partnership!

“Jesus was cursed on the tree in our place and bore our sin in His own body. He did not bear our sin in His blood. It was just as holy on the cross as it ever was. As He offered the sin sacrifice to God, He was covered with pure, innocent, justifying, redeeming, sanctifying blood so that He was able to dismiss His spirit to His Father at death.”    David Alsobrook

  1. The Blood Must Be Applied

Two Ways Blood Applied In O.T.:  1. Diffuse –  Branch of a Hyssop – Everywhere 2. Directional – Using Finger tapped on the mercy seat 7 times

His blood covers everything and it penetrates in every particular.

You Must Apply The Blood!

Revelation 12:10

“And they overcame him (Accuser) by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives to the death.”

The blood speaks! Nothing else needs to be done. As you testify, you speak salvation over every aspect of your life.

Revelation 1:5-6
“To Him who loved us and washed us from our sins in His own blood, and has made us kings and priests to His God and Father, to Him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.”

How many kings and priest are hearing me right now! Getting to heaven is not the message! Reigning and Ruling is the message!  Heaven is invading earth because you are hear!

GOOD NEWS!!!

Jesus is the only cure to sin.

He declares you righteous.

Your accuser is destroyed.

You are forgiven,

Healed and free!!!

Hebrews 9:26 “But now he has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to do away with sin by the sacrifice of himself.”

CLOSING: A. ILLUS.: ANCIENT RUSSIA CHIEF & MOTHER THIEF

  1. In the time before Russia was organized there were numerous tribes. The largest tribe had a great chieftain who was strong, powerful, and unmatched.
  2. Someone kept stealing among his tribe. The thief was unknown. The chieftain first set the punishment at 20 lashes. When the stealing continued, he raised it to 40 lashes. When the thief persevered, the chieftain finally raised it to 50 lashes. This was significant because no one could survive 50 lashes but the chieftain himself.
  3. Finally the thief was caught. It was the chieftain’s mother! No one thought he would punish her. But he had her brought before him. “Strip her back,” he commanded. “Tie her,” “Bring the whips,” “Prepared to strike” he commanded. As the soldiers raised the whips, he cried, “Stop!”
  4. Coming down off his throne, he disrobed and wrapped his hulking form over hers, and then ordered, “Proceed with the punishment!”
  5. Such is what Jesus did for us on Calvary!
